Fragrance, essential oils and wonderful scents that tantalize your senses.

Of the 5 senses, scent is the one that affects our emotions the most. A whiff of an old fragrance can whisk you back to your happy moments in your childhood. A fragrance might remind you of your first love, or of someone you couldn’t stand but was forced to tolerate.

Pheromones drive the opposite sex while. In the animal kingdom, that’s what the females in heat use to signal to males their readiness to mate. The males would often fight it out with the strongest getting that privilege.

In humans, pheromones affect men and women on a primal level. That’s what keeps the perfume industry going. The attraction potential of scents.

Scents also soothe. A great way to destress after a hard day at work is to take an aromatic bath or shower with your favourite fragrance. As the scent envelops you, you delight in that relaxing time out, away from the crazy hassles in this busy world.

This section is all about fragrance. Here are some of my favourites.

Allure Sensuelle

Chanel Allure fragrance was such a huge hit, its sequel, Chanel Allure Sensuelle was soon to follow. I remember when the first Chanel Allure fragrance was launched. My colleague raved about it. I’m not surprised. The fragrance was heavenly.

Today, I just tested a sample of Chanel Allure Sensuelle. The fragrance was uplifting. Floral with a zing. I could not figure out how to describe it other than that this is a fragrance that makes a woman feel good. A pampering scent she can use all day long, for every occasion. Like an everyday scent.

These are the perfume notes in Allure Sensuelle.

  • Bergamot
  • Mandarin Orange
  • Pink Pepper
  • Jasmine
  • Rose
  • Iris
  • Candied Fruit
  • Vetiver
  • French Vanilla
  • Amber
  • Patchouli
  • Frankincense

These are just some of the notes in the complex fragrance. Absolutely delicious.

Bergamot essential oil

I never thought much about bergamot essential oil until my friend told me how it helped her with her migraines. She had horrible splitting headaches that just wouldn’t go away. Then she heard about this oil. Now she diffuses bergamot essential oil in her office. She has a bottle of diluted bergamot essential oil with her, so when migraine hits, she massages a drop on her temples to ease away the pain. It works for her.

Pure bergamot essential oil must not be applied directly on the skin. Dilute a drop or two of it in 5 ml or 1 teaspoon of olive oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil or any carrier oil and store in a clean bottle for use.

I normally wash, dry and keep the empty essential oil bottles to recycle them for diluted oils.

After hearing her experience with bergamot essential oil, I hopped over to The Body Shop and got a bottle. I love the fragrance of neroli. Bergamot has hints of that neroli cologne like fragrance, but is a little more fruity. After all bergamot is from the rind of the bitter orange tree while neroli is from its flowers.

It is a delightful fragrance that can be used as a fragrance on its own… well diluted of course.

One thing to note about bergamot is that it is phototoxic. When bergamot is used on the skin, it makes skin more sensitive to the sun. In other words, when you use bergamot on your skin, stay away from the sun.

Bergamot has a sunny fragrance. It is uplifting and is known to help winter blues. This is the scent to use during winter. It can be described as a shot of sunshine. A great scent to chase away the blues. This scent is for you if you work in the office all the time and hardly see the sun.

Bill Blass perfume

I can still remember my first whiff of Bill Blass perfume. That intoxicatingly sweet fragrance that is light enough for daily use. It is a classy fragrance with top notes of neroli (that gave the euphoric sweetness of the original eau de colognes centuries ago), tuberose and jasmine. I fell in love with that fragrance and had to get it.

It is a feminine floral that’s great for school, or work. A fragrance you’d wear for yourself. Or when you’re out with friends.

This is a fragrance that is light and never overpowering. Layer it on and indulge in that euphoric scent.

Chanel No 5

Chanel No. 5 is a classic. Created in 1921, it is still hot today. Its powdery, florals scent with a hint of something else is unspeakably sophisticated. Sweet but not saccharine. Totally womanly.

Its top notes of ylang-ylang and neroli are sensuous and hypnotic. The heart of the fragrance consists of jasmine and rose, the most precious of flowers, both of which are aphrodisiacs. Beneath it all is a sensual base of sandalwood and smoky vetiver.

Spritz on a little for that taste of luxury. Sophisticaion and sensuality. Pretty much like the image Coco Chanel had in her prime. It was created for her decades ago. I spritz in on when I want to pamper myself. It is a perfume I buy for myself because I love it.

Clarins Eau Dynamisante

I tried Clarins Eay Dymanisante when it first came out. It was the first scent I’d heard of that treats the skin as well. A fresh, citrussy, cologne-like fragrance that’s unisex. An excellent scent for sports, or outdoor activities.

I liked it at first sniff. There’s something so invigorating about it. Smelled like cucumbers and lemons. Back then, it was something you’d splash on to feel refreshed. My pals and I loved using it when we went out.

Here are more versions of this old favourite from Clarins.

Clinique Happy

Clinique Happy is a sweet fragrance that’s good for every day use. It smells like honeyed mandarin oranges. Sweet, uplifting and citrusy. A delicious, non threatening scent.

I guess that’s how the people at Clinique define happiness to smell like if happiness has a scent. A great fragrance to use on a gloomy day, or in a stressful office where any respite is welcome.

The one I’ve got is the fragrance for women. Here’s Clinique Happy perfumes in both the male and female versions.

Estee Lauder Beautiful

You are so beautiful… to me… That was the ad for Estee Lauder’s Beautiful when it was first launched years ago. The image of a bride as a woman is her most beautiful on her wedding day. Beautiful perfume is associated with love. Romance. Isn’t that what keeps the perfume industry thriving these days?

In spite of its name, this is one of my all time favourite fragrances. It is a floral, yet it isn’t too powdery or sweet. There are fruity notes in it. In fact, there are so many notes, you can’t exactly pin point which floral gives it its character. It is a gorgeous blend that pleases the senses.

Beautiful fragrance is a scent light enough for day, yet romantic enough for that dinner date. A great fragrance to wear on vacation or during your honeymoon. A feminine fragrance you’d wear when you just want to pamper yourself.

This too has been relaunched in updated versions. A classic that never dies, for a reason. The fragrance is timeless.

Estee Lauder Knowing

I got a tiny vial of Estee Lauder Knowing years ago when it first launched. It came with a magazine. Back then, I was a student and couldn’t afford to splurge on fragrances like these. I treasured that little vial as the fragrance in it was gorgeous. It is very sweet and intoxicating from the tuberose and mimosa in the top notes. Not little girl, candy cane sweet, but a sophisticated, womanly scent that was all about feminitity and class.

A perfume’s image matters too. Knowing has a model with a knowing look that stares right through you. Nothing vacant headed. A smart woman’s scent.

The entire bouquet is one of sweet intoxication, in a womanly, seductive way. Precious middle notes of jasmine and neroli, each an intoxicatingly sweet aphrosidiac add to the overall effect.

A sweet sexy floral.

Estee Lauder White Linen

My grandma gave me a bottle of Estee Lauder’s white linen before she passed away. It was unused for years as I did not have the hard to use it. I know she’s gone to a better place, but well.. you know.

I finally opened it. This is the classic white linen and the fragrance was so sweet. So feminine. Like a rose. It was exquisite. It soon became my daily fragrance. The crystal clear bottle with the rectangular cap has a special meaning to me. Its fragrance has a lot of sentimental value. An ever practical lady, she wouldn’t want her grand daughter to get too emotional about such things I guess.

White linen has since been relaunched with a modern twist. One of the few classic fragrances that has stood the test of time. It is as gorgeous as ever. Unlike sultry fragrances, this has that rare air of innocence. A floral that speaks of sweetness.. and love.

lavender essential oil

I’m never without a bottle of lavender essential oil. I prefer the organic essential oils or aroma vera products or tisserand as these are the most reputable, but for convenience, I often get my lavender oil from body shop. It works as well anyway.

I use lavender essential oil like a first aid kit in a bottle. When anyone in the family has a cut, out comes my lavender oil. A drop in the wound soothes the pain and heals the wound quickly. I’m accident prone. Once, I accidentally pierced a wooden skewer into my hand and it bled incessantly. I quickly drenched the wound with my lavender oil and within an hour it stopped bleeding. The wound healed quickly without a scar.

Lavender oil is excellent for treating burns as well and it brings relief to insect bites and even pimples.

Lavender has a relaxing fragrance. A mild remedy for insomnia is to put a few drops of lavender essential oil on your pillow at bedtime. A great way to beat stress it to bathe or shower with lavender bath and body products, especially after a hard days work, and feel the stress melt away.

Lou Lou

Cacharel’s Lou Lou is a sensual fragrance that smells simply divine. There is nothing sweet or demure about this scent. It exudes an animalistic sensuality. Years ago, the ads caught my attention. The sultry image of that fragrance was appealing. The fragrance itself is strong. Heady but not nauseatingly sweet. Ylang ylang and a mix of exotic fragrances form the heart of this sexy fragrance.

When it was first out, I liked it so much, I’d spritz a little at the base of my hair bend over and brush it through, so that the fragrance would linger about me and I get to enjoy it all the time.

It is hard to find, which means, if you do get your hands on it, you’ll smell different from everyone else and that is great. It would make an excellent personal fragrance. So different from soft powdery run of the mill fragrances, or citrusy colognes everyone and her sister is wearing these days.

Peppermint essential oil

With my oily skin, I love skin care products with peppermint oil. It has that cooling feeling and cuts through the grease very well. I even have a bottle of peppermint pure essential oil which I used to mix with kaolin and honey to make my own facial masks.

(You must be really careful mixing your own masks with essential oil as if you are sensitive to that oil, or use too much, you can get a nasty reaction. Better buy a mask that contains peppermint essential oil as one of its ingredients.

Personally, I use peppermint oil also for its insect repellent properties. I learnt these from a former colleague. I’d sprinkle a little in the kitchen for the fresh minty scent and to repel the insects that roam at night.

Peppermint is invigorating. It is great in shower gels, in shampoos and basically for bath and body products as well as skin care for oily skin.

The Body Shop Vanilla

There are so many versions of vanilla scents in bath and body products. After all, vanilla is said to turn on the guys. They say that a the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and vanilla reminds one of mom’s delicious baking. Could that be it?

Anyway my favourite vanilla scented bath and body products are the ones from The Body Shop. They smell deliciously of vanilla with hint of something else. Face it. If I just want to smell of vanilla, I might else well buy a bottle of vanilla essence from a supermarket and use that as a perfume. As a personal scent, I’d want something more.

Besides vanilla, there hints of these other notes in these vanilla bath and body products.

Bergamot, peach, strawberry, orange flower, jasmine, plum, ylang ylang, sandalwood, amber and musk. The end result is absolutely yummy.

Tresor perfume

Lancome’s Tresor is a soft floral scent that’s all about femininity. It was the bottle that caught my eye. A crystal bottle shaped like a jewel. Within it was that golden fragrance with its soft, powdery scent.

Lancome Tresor is a non-intrusive fragrance that’s perfect for work, and for daily life. No worries about being mistaken for a skunk with this. Imagine a woman with an overpowering fragrance walking into the elevator and everyone holding her breath until she leaves?

No fears of being that woman when you wear Tresor. This is a soft, unobtrusive fragrance that pleases the senses.

With floral and fruity notes of rose, peach, apricot blossom, jasmine, musk and vanilla, this is a versatile everyday fragrance for a feminine woman.

White musk

White musk is a sexy and sweet fragrance from The Body Shop. It reminds me of white roses with a woody musky base. While musk is extracted from deer or civets, the musky scent from white musk does not involve any cruelty. It is the first in the perfume industry to create a musky scent without killing these animals.

The fragrance is soft, powdery and floral. Rather demure. More sophisticated and sweet than wildly flirty. As a teen, it was the sort of fragrance I’d give my mom. It does make a great gift though, with its lovely packaging and pleasant, universally appealing scent.

Get these for yourself on those days when you want to exude a sweet, demure, or sophisticated ladylike image. Get another set as an emergency gift for the hostess of a party, a birthday or a celebration.

Ylang ylang essential oil

Ylang ylang essential oil is used as an aphrodisiac, to boost overall sensuality as well as for relaxation. The scent comes from the flowers of the asian tree.

I love the scent. It has a sensuous, oriental scent that lingers on. It is can be used a perfume in its own right with many notes to it. Though it comes from flowers, it is not a sweet, powdery floral. Perfumes like Lou lou and Paris Hilton perfume and Mystere by Rochas contain ylang ylang.

In my first year of marriage, I mixed a drop of ylang ylang with a carrier oil to use for a massage for my husband and me. We were trying for kids. I loved the scent. He hated it. It gave him a headache. Still, I got pregnant soon after that.
Not everyone likes the scent. It is a heady scent and can be overwhelming. Best used lightly and for the night.
